Project Description

A Unique New Conservation & Education Resource for North Sumatra

The Orangutan Haven is project developed by the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) and its founding partners, Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari and PanEco Foundation.

    1. The SOCP’s new Orangutan Haven will be the first project of its kind in the world. It will promote nature conservation and sustainable development, in a unique and highly innovative way.
    2. The Haven will provide a refuge for confiscated illegal pet orangutans that we cannot return to the wild, such as a male called «Leuser», blind after people shot him 62 times with an air rifle. The orangutans will live on naturalistic islands, where visitors will see them and learn about their plight, and the problems facing their relatives in northern Sumatra’s remaining forests, including the world renowned Leuser Ecosystem.
    3. The Haven will be a showcase of sustainable development. Visitors, students and local farmers will learn about sustainable agriculture in the Haven’s organically managed farmland. We will showcase and demonstrate new and «green» technologies. We we construct all facilities by using sustainable materials and methods, each therefore serving as an exhibit in itself.
    4. The Haven will help conserve other species too, especially those threatened by the local wildlife trade. By providing naturalistic enclosures and educational opportunities, the Haven will increase understanding and appreciation of such species and reduce demand for wildlife in the area. The Haven will change people’s attitudes and behavior towards wildlife and the environment generally.
    5. The SOCP Orangutan Haven will be a major asset for tourism, schools, universities and other groups throughout the region and elsewhere. They will be able to make use of its facilities for recreation, education and research projects studying the Haven environment and its wildlife. Training programmes in survey methods and field work techniques should also train the next generation of conservationists. It will furthermore employ a significant number of local community members, boosting local livelihoods.
